Announcement of the winners of the AFAF 2024 Call for Projects

We are delighted to announce the results of the AFAF 2024 Call for Projects, a joint initiative to stimulate research into Friedreich's Ataxia. This year, three projects have been selected for their scientific excellence and potential to advance the understanding and treatment of this rare and debilitating disease.

The Winners and Their Projects :

  1. Richard Festenstein (United Kingdom)
    • Project: Restoration of frataxin expression and inhibition of oxidative damage in Friedreich's Ataxia: safety and efficacy in hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes.
  2. Sara Anjomani (United Kingdom)
    • Project: Preclinical efficacy targeting sphingolipid metabolizing enzymes for the treatment of Friedreich's Ataxia.
  3. Giancarlo Iarossi (Italy)
    • Project: Involvement of the early visual system in children and young adults with Friedreich's Ataxia.

These projects were selected for their innovation and scientific rigor, representing a total investment of182,625 euros in medical research. The winners stand out for their exceptional commitment to improving the lives of patients suffering from Friedreich's Ataxia, supported by the ongoing commitment of theAFAF association and the Fondation Maladies Rares.
